How it works
Where a wishlist is kept, what happens when a shopper clicks the heart, and how it works with variations, languages, caches and themes.
From click to wishlist
Where the wishlist is stored
- The Free plugin keeps the wishlist in the shopper's own browser (local storage). Saving and removing is instant, with no request to your server, and works for guests without an account.
- Other open tabs update at once.
- The same browser keeps one list, for guests and logged-in users alike. A different device or browser starts its own list.
- Nothing about wishlists is stored on your server in Free, so there's no personal data to manage.
With Allow Guest Wishlist off, visitors who aren't logged in see no button, and the wishlist page asks them to sign in.
Variable products
The wishlist saves the product, not a chosen variation: choosing a color or size before clicking doesn't change what's saved. The shopper picks the variation when buying.
The wishlist page
When the wishlist page opens, it asks your store for the saved products' current name, image, price and stock, and shows them. Products that no longer exist, or are hidden from your catalog, are removed from the list. See Wishlist page.
Multilingual stores
- Works with WPML and Polylang. A product is one wishlist entry across languages, and the wishlist page shows it in the visitor's language.
- Button and tooltip texts can be translated with String Translation; the wishlist page is translated per language.
Caching
The button is the same for every visitor and its state is applied in the browser, so pages work with full-page caching and CDNs.
Themes & blocks
- Shop and category pages: in classic product loops, in block product grids (Product Collection, related products) and in the Siteryn theme's own product cards. The Position setting then places it on the image, after the title, after the price or after Add to Cart.
- Themes with their own product cards: the plugin marks each product card and places the button with JavaScript, so it works without editing templates on most themes. Grids loaded later by infinite scroll or filters are picked up too.
- Product pages: next to or below Add to cart, in classic product templates. In a fully block-based product template, add it with the shortcode.
- If a theme's cards still don't show it, use the shortcode or PHP function.
- Compatible with High-Performance Order Storage and the Cart and Checkout blocks.
Accessibility
- A real button announced as pressed or not pressed, with a visible or screen-reader label even when only the icon shows.
- The tooltip and item count are announced to screen readers; remove buttons are labelled with the product name.
- Visible focus rings, touch targets of at least 44 px (38–40 px for the button on a product image), "Show only on hover" also revealing the icon on keyboard focus, and no animation for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
