Recovery campaigns
Replace the single reminder with a sequence of up to five emails. Each email can have its own timing, words, coupon, design and A/B subject line. A campaign can send from its own sender and goes only to the carts you target.
How campaigns work
- When a cart is abandoned, it joins one campaign: the highest-priority running campaign whose conditions all match. Ties go to the older campaign.
- Carts that no campaign takes still get the Free plugin's single Recovery Email, if it's on. Carts in a campaign never get that single email as well.
- Unsubscribed addresses never join a campaign.
- Carts abandoned in the last 7 days that never got an email are picked up too, so turning on a campaign doesn't miss recent carts.
- Emails respect your Sending rules: the frequency limit, the send window and unsubscribes. They are sent through the Free plugin's mailer, so its checks apply too, including Recovery Email → One Email per Address Every.
The campaign list
- Header line with the campaign count and the New campaign button
- A campaign row with its Active pill, priority, emails, carts and sent counts
- Edit, Pause, Duplicate and red Delete actions
- Email templates card below with the four presets
The header says how many campaigns you have and how many are active. Each row shows:
- The name.
- A timeline, such as "3 emails: 1 h → 1 d → 3 d".
- A summary of its conditions.
- Its Status, Priority, number of Emails, Carts enrolled and emails Sent.
- The buttons Edit, Pause/Activate, Duplicate and Delete.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Active | Running and taking new carts. |
| Paused | Takes no new carts and holds the emails of carts already in it. |
| Scheduled | Active, but its start date is in the future. |
| Ended | Its end date has passed. It sends no more emails. |
| No emails | The campaign has no emails yet. |
You can have up to 50 campaigns. A duplicate is created paused, named "… (copy)", with the same sender, design and A/B settings. Before your first campaign, the tab shows "Win back more carts with a campaign" with a Create your first campaign button.
Building a campaign
- Campaign card: name, priority, Active, start and end dates, sender fields
- Conditions card with Add condition
- Emails card and the sticky Save campaign bar with Send a test of email
A new campaign starts paused, with one email that waits 60 minutes. The save bar stays at the bottom of the screen. Click Save campaign when you're ready.
Campaign
For your own reference. A blank name is saved as "Untitled campaign".
Higher wins when a cart matches several campaigns.
Paused campaigns take no new carts and hold their emails.
In your site's timezone. Use them for seasonal campaigns such as Black Friday. After the end date, the campaign sends no more emails.
A sender for this campaign only. Empty From fields use your Recovery Email sender (and then your WooCommerce email sender). With no Reply-to, replies go to the From address. Use an address on your own domain so emails aren't marked as spam.
Conditions
A cart joins only if it matches all conditions. With no conditions, the campaign targets every abandoned cart. You can add up to 10 conditions per campaign. Amounts and counts must be numbers of 0 or more: a value such as "abc" isn't saved, and you see, for example, "Condition 2 (Cart value): enter a number, 0 or more."
| Condition | Rules | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Cart value | is at least / is at most | An amount, e.g. 50 |
| Products in cart | includes any of / includes none of | Product IDs, comma-separated. A variation counts as its parent. |
| Product categories in cart | includes any of / includes none of | Category IDs, comma-separated |
| Customer | is | new, returning, registered or guest |
| Previous orders | is at least / is at most | A whole number |
| Coupon in cart | is | applied or none |
| Recovery emails in the last 90 days | is at least / is at most | A whole number |
| Customer segment (role) | includes any of / includes none of | Role slugs, e.g. customer, wholesale, guest |
| Recovery link engagement | is | clicked or not_clicked |
| Recovered a cart before | is | yes or no |
| Saved segment | is / is not | Pick one of your saved segments |
Emails
Add up to five emails with Add email. Each appears as a numbered card ("Email 1", "Email 2"…) with arrows to reorder, Preview, Write with AI (when AI is set up) and a remove button.
- Email 1 with Start from a template…, Insert and Save as template
- Wait, Subject, Subject B and "Carts getting B (%)"
- Heading, Message and Button text, with the Coupon section open
"Start from a template…" fills the email from a preset or one of your templates. See Email templates.
Minutes, hours or days. The first email waits after the cart is abandoned; each later email waits after the previous one.
Empty uses your Recovery Email subject.
Optional A/B test. See A/B subject lines.
Empty uses your Recovery Email heading.
You can use {first_name}, {store_name}, {cart_total} and, with a coupon, {coupon_code}.
Empty uses your Recovery Email button text.
Optionally include a unique coupon. See Smart coupons.
Change the look of this email only. See Email design.
Email design
Each email inherits the design from Recovery Email → Design. Open its Design panel to change it for that email only:
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Product images | Default, Show or Hide |
| Cart table | Default (shown), Show or Hide. Hiding the product table suits a personal "any questions?" email. |
| Button color | Any colour. Empty uses the default. The button text turns black or white automatically for contrast. |
| Logo | Choose an image from the media library. Empty uses the default logo. |
The design applies to the real email, the preview and test sends.
A/B subject lines
Fill in Subject B to test two subject lines on the same email. Carts getting B (%) sets the share of carts that get B (50 by default). The rest get the main subject.
- Each cart always gets the same subject for that email, so a shopper never sees both.
- The Analytics tab compares Sent, Opens (when tracked), Clicks, Click rate and Recovered for each variant.
- No winner is picked automatically. When one subject clearly wins, copy it into Subject, clear Subject B and save.
{coupon_code}and the other placeholders work in Subject B too.
Email templates
Start any email from a ready-made template, or save one you wrote and reuse it in any campaign.
| Preset | Subject | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Friendly reminder | Did you forget something, {first_name}? | A warm first nudge. |
| Discount nudge | A little something to complete your order | Comes with a 10% coupon that expires in 3 days. |
| Last chance | Last chance: your cart expires soon | A final reminder with gentle urgency. |
| Help, any questions? | Any questions about your order, {first_name}? | Invites a reply. The cart table is hidden. |
- Insert
Choose a template in "Start from a template…" and click Insert. If the email already has text, you're asked first: "It replaces this email's texts, coupon and design. Nothing is saved until you save the campaign." The wait is never changed.
- Save as template
Open Save as template in any email, enter a Template name and click Save template. It's saved right away with the email's current texts, A/B subject, coupon and design settings, and appears under "Your templates" everywhere. You can keep up to 50.
- Manage
The Email templates card under the campaign list shows every template. Delete your own templates there; campaigns that used one keep their emails. To change a template, save a new version and delete the old one.
A proven three-email sequence
| Wait | Template | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 hour | Friendly reminder. No discount. |
| 2 | 1 day | Help, any questions? Reassurance and a reply-to address. |
| 3 | 2 days | Discount nudge. 10% off, expires in 3 days. |
Preview and test
- Preview opens the email in a dialog exactly as it is on screen, unsaved changes and design included. It works for new campaigns too. Switch between Desktop and Mobile, or open it in a new tab. A sample cart is used, and
{coupon_code}appears asSAMPLE-CODE. - Send a test of email sends the saved version of the email you pick, with the campaign's sender and the email's design, to any address. Save the campaign first. You can send 5 tests per minute, and tests never create real coupons.
- Preview and tests always use the main subject, not Subject B.
- Preview dialog titled "Email 1 preview"
- Desktop / Mobile toggle and "Open in new tab"
- The unsaved text rendered with a sample cart
How sequences behave
| When… | The sequence… |
|---|---|
| The shopper starts shopping again | Pauses, and resumes if the cart is abandoned again. |
| The shopper comes back through a recovery link, or the order is completed | Completes; no more emails. A return counts only once the shopper's browser confirms it (or they place the order), so an email security scanner that opens the link doesn't end the sequence. |
| The cart expires, or the customer bought in another order | Stops. Customers who already bought are never emailed. |
| The address is unsubscribed | Stops at once, without retries. The timeline shows "Recovery email skipped: customer unsubscribed". |
| The campaign is paused | Holds its emails and checks again every hour. |
| The frequency limit is reached | Waits, and checks again after 6 hours. |
| An email falls due outside the send window | Waits for the next allowed time. The timeline shows "Campaign email postponed" with "waits for the send window". |
| The address got a recovery email for another cart within One Email per Address Every | Waits until that interval has passed. The timeline shows "Campaign email postponed" with "this address got a recovery email for another cart recently". |
| Sending fails | Retries 3 times, 15 minutes apart. |
| 30 days have passed | Stops. |
Each email has its own recovery link, so links in earlier emails keep working. Every campaign email carries the unsubscribe link and one-click unsubscribe header. Up to 50 campaign emails are sent per five-minute run.
